The Wairarapa is a river, awa valley from the Tararuas to Onoke, Ngutu o Te Awa. Always there were/are river stones, bedding the river, under the soil. Time is measured vertically in layers of rocks connecting us to our ancestors through the land, te whenua, woven by the Ruamāhanga and all its tributaries. Witness leans as if against a fellow stone under the dark green flowing river water, wai, dented with age.
